I agree that the appeal of this photograph, which it has for me, is in the unsophisticated elements that lead to the recollections Brooks speaks of. There's the lack of an intruding artifice--the artist stayed with the awkward glare from the sunlight. The transition? The flowers, joyfully thrown into the mason jar, wither.
